With this piece I started exploring straighter lines, more reminiscent of fabric than elastic. Conceptually, the Escape Jars deal with contained emotions and compartmentalization: when you carry burdens with you and put on a good face, only allowing yourself to be vulnerable in private, where you feel safe to “take the lid off.” Making an Escape Jar helps me externalize my burdens and allow space for my emotions. I hope that viewers and collectors can relate, and bring their own stories to the work.
